Lanterra Developments’ latest condominium community in North York was closely modelled after an idyllic Italian city, called Treviso. The only things missing are rolling hills awash with olive trees, wineries and cattle, according to the developer’s president and CEO.

“You don’t have to get on a plane and travel eight hours to get to Italy. You can get in a car and travel 20 minutes,” says Barry Fenton, who ventured abroad with his team to study the European culture, architecture and landscaping firsthand.

“Even the exterior design of the buildings and the colours of them, we wanted to replicate being in a town in Italy.”

If sales numbers are any indication, many are literally buying into the concept as the developer moves into the third and final phase of the master-planned development, called Treviso, at the corner of Dufferin Street and Lawrence Avenue, near Yorkdale Shopping Centre.

“We just launched over a month ago – six weeks ago – and we’re getting the same follow through we had from phase one and two, where we sold over 1,000 units,” Mr. Fenton said. “So we’ve had people clamouring to get in because we don’t have enough inventory left in phase one and two.”

Page + Steele/IBI Group Architects designed the high-rises with colonnades surrounding a piazza with a water feature, bridges, bocce courts and a large park, as well as 60,000 square feet of street level retail space, including shops and restaurants.

“We created a city within a city at Dufferin and Lawrence,” says Mr. Fenton, adding that all the infrastructure will be completed long before occupancy begins for phase three in June, 2017.

“A lot of our value was created by the amenity spaces and outdoor spaces we create not only within … but throughout the project as well.”

For instance, this phase will be the smallest, with 390 units in a 15-storey frame, but it will have its own lobby with 24-hour concierge, a pet spa, fitness facilities, boardroom, a theatre, lounges, games and party rooms and a rooftop terrace with a pool and hot tub.

Within minutes of the infill site, residents can spend hours using sports and recreational resources at the Columbus Centre or shopping at outlets and upscale boutiques on Orfus and Yorkdale roads respectively. Plus, public transit, Allen Road and Highway 401 are all easily accessible.

“I call it the centre ice of being up north,” Mr. Fenton said. “A lot of [buyers] have come from the community itself because there’s really been nothing like this before of this creativity and stature.”

Floor plans will offer one- to three-bedroom layouts, with or without dens, and modern interiors that Munge Leung will fashion with laminate, porcelain and ceramic tile flooring, granite kitchen counters and stainless steel appliances.

“We didn’t make a lot of changes because it’s what the community wanted,” Mr. Fenton said. “There been a lot more demand for middle size units, like 750 square feet [models] that we can create two bedrooms and two bedroom plus dens, and we also have some larger units in this phase.”
